James Carpenter

James Carpenter is an architect located in New York and was a 2004 recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship. Carpenter combines environmentalism, art and engineering to capture the imaginative possibilities of light and material to create sophisticated and modern architecture. He studies the natural refraction and reflection of light to create an environmentally aware space where artificial lights are not necessary until the sun goes down. In my design, I wanted the viewer to understand the complexity and beauty of Carpenter’s work. My goal was to capture the light and grace that is intertwined with his architecture but also to communicate the solidity and functionality of the buildings.
